The goal of the Witness Electronic Camera Program (WEcam) is to deter crime and promote public safety through collaboration between the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) and the communities we serve. WEcam provides citizens and businesses with a way to enhance our community’s proactive approach to preventing and solving crime.
By voluntarily registering your contact information with VBPD and advising them of the presence of security cameras at your home or business, officers and/or detectives will know how to reach you if a crime or other public safety concern (e.g. a missing child or adult) occurs in the vicinity of your property.
Registering your information does not provide VBPD with direct access to your camera, but rather enables the VBPD to quickly reach out to you to determine if your security system may have captured evidence that could aid them in an investigation.
VBPD officers and detectives will only contact you if they believe your camera could contain evidence relevant to a criminal investigation or a public safety concern. Evidence provided by your camera could be the difference between bringing a perpetrator to justice versus leaving a crime unsolved.
